You may not have heard of Alicia J. Augello-Cook but unless you have been living under a rock you know Alicia Keys. The R&B singer and pianist has sold over 30 million albums worldwide since 2002. She is also popular with the industry insiders and has taken home 11 Grammy’s along with Billboard and American Music Awards.
Alicia Keys was born in Harlem but grew up in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York. Good thing the rough sounding hood did not seem to affect her style. At age seven she was already practicing classical piano. After graduating from a prestigious art high school in Manhattan she signed with Jermaine Dupri. Her first single for Men in Black though failed to gain much attention and she was dropped from the label. Four years later she bounced back big time with her first album Songs in A Minor and her single “Fallin” hit number one. Her second album The Diary of Alicia Keys was even more successful debuting at number one. |
